Class A year in review
Its the offseason for high school sports as the 2008-2009 season has wrapped up in North Dakota On Thursday Tia Streeter looked back at the Class B year that was Today here s a look at Class A andamp quot The Fall saw Fargo Shanley beat Fargo North The girls swimming world was again lit up by Minot and their star athlete Dagny Knutson who set a national record in the 200 Freestyle at state Minot also dominated the links the host team crushed everyone else by 43 strokes at State golf Grand Forks Red River won the State tennis championship Bismarck Century beat cross town rival Bismarck High as they finally broke through for a state volleyball title And Bismarck High took their first two titles of the year in boys and girls Cross Country where the boys won their 4th straight championship And it was a familiar matchup in 3 A football at the Dakota Bowl there were a lot of doubters but Bismarck High shocked Fargo South with a 28 to 19 thumping of the Bruins As the snow continued to fall and fall some more a long time reigning champion fell as well After 10 straight boys swimming titles West Fargo upset the powerhouse that was Minot swimming The gymnastics title was won by the girls from Minot And wrestling was dominated by the boys from Bismarck High again The trophy case added two more sets of hardware as the Demons were dual and team champions Fargo North won their second straight girls hockey title over the Bismarck Blizzard And for just the second time ever the Demons were in the championship of the boys hockey tournament Although the BHS team lost to Red River Mike Peluso was a success in his first year with the Demons Another dynasty fell After 6 straight titles Mandan was out and Bismarck High finally became the new top dog in girls basketball Although the Mandan girls were out the Mandan boys found their way back in The Braves rode a 1 loss season all the way to a championship This spring Grand Forks Red River won the girls tennis title and Fargo South cruised to another girls soccer title In the first year for girls high school softball West Fargo made history And in boys golf Fargo South won their sixth straight state championship The Bismarck Community Bowl saw no suprise at the top The Bismarck High girls ran their way to their second straight title while the Demon boys proved unstopable again 6 straight championships looked easy for BHS For the second time in 3 years the Dickinson High baseball team was victorious Stephen Laylock threw an impressive no hitter as the Midgets won it all Looking back at yet another year of big winners I m Tia Streeter andamp quot
