Local soldier helping children in Iraq
Many of the stories regarding the war in Iraq are violent and negative But this one is quite the opposite One North Dakota National Guard soldier is helping children in the war-torn country by giving them simple items many American children take for granted Reporter Tracy Fugere has more Reporter Tracy Fugere Steve Jahner is the commander of the 164th Battalion based in Minot The unit has been north of Baghdad since August and plans to be home in May But before they leave there s another mission they want to finish Mindy Jahner And they re going to build a Soccerfield before they re-deploy home equipped with grass and bleachers and a changing room Reporter Tracy Fugere Soccer known as Football in Iraq is the most popular sport But many of the children in the neighborhood don t have soccerballs or much of anything So Mindy and Steve discussed it and Steve told his wife that soccerballs may be a great gift for the kids there And then another great thing happened the Elks Club in Bismarck caught wind of what the Jahners wanted to do and it donated 72 soccerballs for the kids Steve is overjoyed Mindy Jahner His comment is That s North Dakota The kids just need some way to get rid of energy and something to build self-esteem They have nothing In their neighborhoods they have nothing And being soccer is such a big sport he thought that s something they would really get a kick out of Reporter Tracy Fugere MIndy says the kids are very appreciative of anything they receive whether it be a sucker or attention from the soldiers Mindy Jahner Not every child is going to receive a ball but if they can have a playing field where 50 balls are housed and the children are able to go play at that soccer field Reporter Tracy Fugere Mindy was at the Perogue Grill in Bismarck one night and the owner overheard that she was donating items to children in Iraq So then that owner donated a box of writing pens for the kids Mindy Jahner I think especially at the Christmas season We see our children getting so much and he s sees those children with nothing And yeah we re lucky We re lucky to be Americans We re lucky to live where we do Reporter Tracy Fugere Mindy says they will accept any donations for the kids in Iraq from candy necklaces to anything that will put a smile on a child s face In Bismarck Tracy Fugere KX News Anyone interested in donating items for the children in Iraq that Commander Steve Jahner is helpingcontact Mindy Jahner at 255-2339 or email her at mindyjahner yahoo com

2007 in Review, Part 1
It s a tradition to pause as the year ends to remember the big events of the past 12 months And it s a tradition we ve carried on for years So tonight Jim Olson begins his look at the major local news stories of 2007 with a peek at what was in the headlines during January and February Only a few days into 2007 this sound marked the start of a very big newsmaking event - the legislative session Minot native John Hoeven addressed lawmakers for his state of the state address- a message that may have been his last if he decided not to seek a third term as governor But that thought changed later in the year - we ll cover it later in our reports Locally big stories at the Legislature in the first weeks of the session included an effort to land ten million dollars in funding for a new grandstand at the State Fairgrounds in Minot Local legislators testified in favor of the funding but it was not included in the final budget Darlene Watne Ward Co Board We also heard that the building is for sale The Ward County Board began what turned out to be an eventful year with debate about space issues A vote for a new office building had failed in late 2006 and 2007 began with options being kicked around - including buying the building where they ve been renting space for years - the Oppen Center on Minot s north hill The idea died but the county did decide to lease more space in that building while awaiting a long-term decision on new office space Bill Krueger Consultant It just doesn t strike me as something in all my experience that that would be something that would be the first choice to take a look at The mayor s committee looking into a new sports complex called the Community Bowl met early in January and scrapped the idea of seeking a domed facility that could house many sports including Football and baseball The committee scaled back its plans and later in the year decided to seek a new football-Soccer complex at the site of the current Herb Parker Stadium at Minot State University Questions about funding that plan will likely go before voters in 2008 A biofuels plant planned for east Minot the Dakota Skies biodiesel Plant announced plans to double its size in January But those plans soon fell through as the company and Minot Area Development Corporation parted ways because of a lack of progress on the project - and a need to dedicate the land to other uses for a growing ag park In Velva students got out of school early in early February as a steam pipe burst and forced school officials to evacuate the building No one was hurt and the Velva Principal said it provided a good chance to test the school s emergency plans A small church west of Williston the West Prairie Lutheran Church burned down in mid-February Firefighters were unable to save the vintage building - a loss estimated at more than 200-thousand dollars George Killmer Derailment Victim I thought I had met my maker Residents of west Minot remembered January 18th - marking five years since a Canadian Pacific Railway train derailed and spilled toxic anhydrous ammonia over the city One man was killed and hundreds were injured As the 5th anniversary hit many were still wondering how and when their legal claims against the railroad would be settled Some answers came over the next several months as a multi-million dollar class action lawsuit was negotiated and dozens of individual suits against the railroad were settled as well Farmers took their non-growing season break to bone up on the latest news at places like Rugby where the annual ag show was held in February In Williston the 54th Annual wheat Show included talk that the current strong prices - then close to four dollars - might just go higher Little did anyone realize those prices would triple - with wheat finishing the year at more than ten dollars a bushel And a North Dakota teacher was one of 25 in the nation chosen to travel to Saudi Arabia to learn about the culture and the education system there Nick Knoll shared his plans for his trip with his class at the Round Prairie School 25 miles west of Williston as February ended Jim Olson KX News Tomorrow Jim will continue his look at top local stories of 2007 with the big news from March and April

Funding For Community Bowl Debated
What will it take to upgrade the athletic facilities in Minot Maybe the better question is how will an upgrade be paid for That was the main topic of discussion for the Community Bowl Committee that met at Minot s City Hall this morning The group now has an artist s rendition of what a new Football track and Soccer complex would look like but how will the 11 to 12 million be raised to pay for it A proposed hospitality tax is currently be researched but Minot Mayor Curt Zimbelman cautioned the group against using only that to raise the funds mainly because it would take so long Curt Zimbelman Minot Mayor When you are looking at a hospitality tax and I hope that works out well you are probably looking at 15 to 18 years of tax and that is a difficult sell for a tax that long I just although a sales tax would be tough as well personally I think that is a much easier sell to the community You may notice another feature with the proposed facility a bubble that would be used in the winter months keeping the inside a comfortable 55 degrees That would add an additional one million dollars to the project If a one cent sales tax like the mayor was suggesting is the direction the committee chooses to go it would be on the ballot more than likely in June of next year Paying for the Community Bowl in that fashion would take about two years with between six and eight million being generated each year
